Nabil Murday started as a high school kid with a dream of his own magic show but did not know a single magician. All he had were VHS recordings of TV magic specials, books from the local library, and theater classes to learn how to act and put on a show. A friend wrote a play in which Nabil starred and performed magic. It was terrible, but they had fun.

In 1998 he was set for the University of Minnesota until he heard that the youngest-ever world champion of close-up magic, Thomas Meier, was a student at USC. So he went there instead, hoping to meet a real live magician. They became fast friends, and Thomas introduced Nabil to his mentor, Loren Christopher Michaels, who taught him how to unleash his own ideas.

Nabil quit college planning to do magic full time, but ended up having to sell children’s shoes at a Macy’s to pay the rent. In 2001 he joined the Magic Castle and took a job at Hollywood Magic Shop so he could work on magic all day and perform it all night. There he befriended Shoot Ogawa, newly arrived from Tokyo, who showed him a level of magic he had not known was possible.

In 2004 their friend Apollo Robbins, the pickpocket entertainer, decided Nabil needed time outside the magic world and sent him to The Quiddlers, a physical-comedy troupe. He spent six months playing Michael Jackson at Sandcastle on Saipan. That is the run that changed the plan: he fell in love with the islands, and with performing for people who vacationed here.

After a brief stint performing his own local TV magic series, in 2011 he opened Biba Magic Theater on Guam. Fifteen years on, the show has nine Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice awards and a place in the top 10% of theaters worldwide. He has performed in the Castle’s Close-up Gallery and headlined its Palace of Mystery. This season he performs illusions and stage magic on three episodes of Masters of Illusion on The CW.
